Day 1: Arrival in Chicago

• Morning/Afternoon: Arrival at Chicago International Airport and pick-up of your rental car. Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, Chicago is one of the largest cities in the United States. It is a cosmopolitan city offering a unique landscape, with both natural and urban overtones. It is known for its bold architecture, numerous skyscrapers, green spaces, and a wide range of culinary, artistic and cultural offerings.


• Evening : Overnight at the Kimpton Gray Hotel.

Day 2: Discover Chicago

• Morning: Start with the Loop, a lively downtown neighborhood where you will find landmark monuments, such as Millennium Park. In the Uptown district you will find Art Deco buildings, historic theaters and cabarets. Districts like Chinatown, Little Italy, Lincoln Square and many others reflect the cosmopolitan character of the city. Bucktown and Wicker Park are famous for concert venues and trendy bars. 

 

• Afternoon: Stroll along the Chicago Riverwalk or rent bikes to ride the Lakefront Trail, which follows the lake for 29 kilometers. Chicago also offers a rich cultural experience, with no less than 60 museums. Among them, the Museum Campus. As a family, visit the Lincoln Park Zoo, the Navy Pier or Wrigley Field Baseball Stadium.

Day 3: Drive to Saint Louis, MO

• Morning: Drive to Springfield, Illinois via Bloomington, where you will find Memory Lane, a section of the original Route 66, restored in the 1940s and featuring picturesque old billboards. Arrive in Springfield. This charming capital offers many historic and cultural treasures. It is a calm and welcoming city, focused on environmental awareness, with over 100 parks and a comprehensive network of urban cycling paths.

 

• Afternoon: Then head to Saint Louis. Founded in 1764 by French trappers, Saint Louis was named after the French king, Louis IX. The city offers a wide variety of attractions, exhibitions and culinary specialties, all in a friendly and cosmopolitan environment. The iconic Gateway Arch, erected in 1965, is the tallest arch in the world.

Day 4: Springfield, MO

• Morning: Stop at the Meramec Caves, which were formed by the erosion of large limestone deposits over millions of years. Then, on to Rolla and its famous Totem Pole Trading Post, one of the oldest along the route that is still in use.  Afterwards, you pass through Devil’s elbow, a particularly rugged town.


• Afternoon: Continue to Springfield, Missouri, officially recognized as the birthplace of Route 66. Here you can visit the Route 66 Car Museum. Then pass through Park Central Square and  don't miss the History Museum on the Square, which traces the history of the city.

 

• Evening : Overnight at the Hotel Vandivort.

Day 5: Missouri and Oklahoma States

• Morning: On your way to OKC you will first pass through the city of Carthage which offers a heritage of architectural wonders and emblematic sites. Then, to reach Joplin, take the very old section of the famous Route 66, leading you into the downtown area where you will discover the city’s rich history and charm. Then head to Tulsa. The city, which combines modern flair with the heritage typical of Route 66, is now known for its flourishing cultural offerings and numerous activities.

 

• Afternoon: State capital, Oklahoma City (I.E. OKC) is a dynamic city with a western spirit. Discover this Wild West culture on the side of Stockyards City Main Street. You can also attend a rodeo at Rodeo Opry or horseback riding competitions at the State Fair Park. The city offers many museums. Art enthusiasts should stop by the Paseo Historic District or visit the Oklahoma City Museum of Art.

Day 6: Amarillo

• Morning: You will pass through typical many small towns in the heart of Route 66. First up in Bethany and stop at the Trading Post. Then, Clinton where you can visit the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum. Stop by Elk City where you will again find a beautiful museum dedicated to the famous route. Continuing on to Texas you will first see the town of Shamrock with its famous U Drop Café Inn, built in 1936 in an avant-garde style.

 

• Afternoon: Amarillo is a small Texan town with a Far West atmosphere. The Amarillo Livestock Auction is an impressive sight to behold, real cowboys, wearing Stetson hats and saddlebags, come to sell off prize hogs, cattle and horses. Check out the Kwahadi Kiva Indian Museum for some insight into the lifestyle and traditions of local Native Americans such as the Pueblo.

Day 7: Drive to Santa Fe

• Morning: Don't forget to stop at the Cadillac Ranch. Continue to Tucumcari, a city seemingly frozen in time, retaining the iconic style and architecture of the 1940s. Then take the road to Santa Rosa, a city with Mexican architecture that houses more than a dozen classic structures, typical of Route 66. 

 

• Afternoon: Head to Santa Fe. The heart of the city revolves around The Plaza. Visit the Governor's Palace, the oldest continuously occupied public building in the United States. Take a tour of the Native American art market located just steps from the palace. Sante Fe is also renowned for its culinary specialties. 

 

• Evening : Overnight at La Posada de Santa Fe, a Tribute Portfolio Resort & Spa.

Day 8: Albuquerque

• Morning: Albuquerque is crossed by the Rio Grande and surrounded by the Sandia Mountains. Founded in 1706, the city is strongly imbued with Native American and Spanish culture. Visit the historic center where you can see its pueblo-style buildings and visit the San Felipe de Neri church, the oldest in the city.

 

• Afternoon: Don’t miss the Albuquerque Museum of Art and History or discover native cultures at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center or the Petroglyph National Monument. Get a panoramic view of the city on the Sandia Peak Tramway. Or, better yet, a hot air balloon. 

 

• Evening : Overnight at the Courtyard by Marriott Albuquerque.

Day 9: Gallup, Petrified Forest and Holbrook

• Morning: Stop in Gallup, known as the capital of the American Indians. Let yourself be seduced by the artisanal products, handmade by locals. Don't miss the iconic murals in the downtown area or the Rex Museum to learn about local history. 

 

• Afternoon: Cross the Petrified Forest National Park, originally territory of Navajo and Apache tribes. On its 81,000 hectares, you will discover a cultural and geological history of 225 million years. Explore this esoteric national park to discover multicolored sandstones and remains of ancient civilizations. Arrival at Holbrook where you can visit The Navajo County Historical Society Museum.

Day 10: Grand Canyon National Park

• Morning: The Grand Canyon National Park is a gigantic chasm of winding trails, colossal towers and open cliffs, carved over millions of years by the Colorado River. The park covers a protected area of over 3000 square miles formed by rocks, some of which are 1.7 billion years old. 

 

• Afternoon: Through several hikes, you will be able to admire the canyon from different angles. The "Rim Trail", 12.5 miles long, runs along the edge of the Grand Canyon and offers you about fifteen viewpoints. It is also here that you can start one of the most famous hikes into the canyon on Bright Angel Trail.  

 

• Evening : Overnight at the Yavapai Lodge.

Day 11: Kingman

• Morning: Make a stop in Williams. The city has retained the picturesque charm and authenticity of traditional Route 66 highway towns. In the surrounding area, you can enjoy various outdoor activities. Then drive to Seligman and Hackberry, an extremely well-preserved portion of Route 66. 

 

• Afternoon: In Seligman, stop by Delgadillo's Route 66 Gift Shop which is filled with antiques and souvenirs of the historic highway. Continue to Hackberry, an old mining town founded in 1874. Today it is a "ghost town" located in the heart of Route 66. Here, don't miss its General Store, a former drugstore. Head to Kingman. Don’t miss the Powerhouse, which houses a museum dedicated to this historic route. 

 

• Evening : Overnight at the Best Western Plus King's Inn & Suites.

Day 12: Heading to the City of Angels

• Morning: Make a stop in Oatman, a city lost in the mountains, on the old Route 66. Oatman, a veritable ghost-town was closed to the public in 1998, before being resurrected few years after. Next, you can drop by the famous Baghdad Café before heading to Calico. Another a ghost-town. 

 

• Afternoon: Head back to Barstow, the perfect place for fans of Route 66 to discover the Mother Road Museum, dedicated to this mythical road. Finally, on the road to Los Angeles, make one last stop at Oro Grand and its attraction: Elmer Long's Bottle Tree Ranch. 

 

• Evening : Overnight at the Grafton on Sunset.

Day 13: Los Angeles

• Morning: Venice Beach and Santa Monica are two of Los Angeles's must-see neighborhoods. At Griffith Park, discover the emblematic Griffith Observatory. Continue to Hollywood Boulevard and its entertainment industry.  Afterwards, stroll down the Walk of Fame in search of your favorite actor’s memorial star.

 

• Afternoon: Then head to the famous Beverly Hills neighborhood, an incredible residential area. Finish off with a gourmet break at the Farmers Market, a huge and historic market. Los Angeles is also famous for its numerous art museums such as the LACMA. Finally, perched on the hills of Brentwood Village, the Getty Center is a huge cultural complex of 40 hectares.
